The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category May Address This Issue

Whenever a significant honors show approaches, you'll find a demand for the addition additional classifications to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and delight the spirits of enthusiasts with niche passions.

Another commentator made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. So would tabletop games, which is someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front just as with other single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand stands as crucial and important of all. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and typically spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why film award organizations avoid this approach. But it is a necessary evil within the realm of video games, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards presently include classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories effectively encompass many game types, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges of one title, intense tile-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Which classification works within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers released every year that have no home in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated completely that year
  • A different innovative game missed out in 2019
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked that year
  • Just some brain-teasers scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent modest productions, but the art in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games rank among most popular titles worldwide and have been for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with well-known building titles claiming status as most purchased experience; it also contends for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and engaging across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. One could readily select five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these are games without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers function at the demanding boundary interactive creation, developing some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Similar to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
