Six Britons Sentenced to Prison for £1m Fire Attack on Storage Facility Holding Aid for Ukraine

A group of six individuals from Britain acting for the Wagner mercenary group linked to Russia have been sentenced to prison for igniting a located in London warehouse that was storing relief supplies destined for Ukraine.

Court Rulings and Involvement

While delivering the sentences, the presiding judge at the central criminal court remarked that they had orchestrated a “series of terrorist and sabotage acts” to benefit the Russian state.

The individual named Dylan Earl received a 17-year jail term with an extra six-year period on supervised release due to his “leading role”. Jake Reeves, from Croydon in south London, was sentenced to 12 years in jail with an additional year on extended licence. The offences they admitted made them the first individuals to be found guilty under the National Security Act 2023.

Jakeem Rose, aged 23, also a Croydon resident, was jailed for a term of eight years and ten months. Nii Mensah, a Thornton Heath, South London local, was sentenced to nine years imprisonment and Ugnius Asmena, who was without a fixed address, was handed seven years in prison. These three individuals were each convicted of aggravated arson and received a additional year on supervised release by the court.

Ashton Evans, a 20-year-old individual involved in drug trafficking hailing from Newport, Gwent, was sentenced to nine years with an extra year on supervised release after being found guilty of withholding information about acts of terrorism relating to another plot in the Mayfair area.

Details of the Attack

The arson attack on a Leyton-based storage facility in East London put 60 firefighters at risk and resulted in £1m in damage in March last year.

The court heard that the 21-year-old Earl and the 24-year-old Reeves did not leave their bedrooms while coordinating the incident for the Wagner mercenary organization, acting on behalf of the Russian government.

The individuals involved selected the warehouse because it was being utilized for providing humanitarian aid and satellite communication gear to Ukraine.

When the same Ukrainian company was hit by an intentional fire 10 days later in Madrid, detectives from the Met’s counter-terrorism command took over the investigation.

Evidence and Further Plans

When Earl was arrested, law enforcement examination of his cellphone revealed he had recordings of the storage facility blaze being initiated and was in communication with the Wagner group on Telegram, via an user profile with the usernames ‘Privet Bot account’ and ‘Lucky Strike alias’.

Some of the communications showed that reconnaissance for additional operations, involving fire-related incidents at a dining establishment and wine store in Mayfair district owned by the Russian dissident Evgeny Chichvarkin had already taken place. The use of explosives to damage buildings was also deliberated.

Investigators discovered that the defendant Earl was also raising the possibility of kidnapping Chichvarkin and “exiling him back to Russia to face prison”.

The individual involved in narcotics from Elmesthorpe in Leicestershire had talked about an additional planned incident in the Czech nation.

In a search of his home, law enforcement found a Russian flag, more than £20,000 in cash and cocaine with a street value of about £34,000.

Motivations and Judicial Remarks

The court heard he was a member of multiple pro-Russian propaganda channels and was motivated by “simple and ugly greed”.

“This legal matter concerns the efforts of the Russian Federation to gain pernicious global influence using online platforms to enlist saboteurs vast distances from Moscow.”

She determined the arson attack had a “terrorist connection” irrespective of if the perpetrators knew it. The Wagner organization is proscribed by the UK government as a terrorist group.
