The US central bank cut borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second reduction this year amid economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.
Decision Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank
The move to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Notes Job Market Shifts
In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the release reads. “Price increases has risen and stays moderately high.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.
Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves
The Fed usually analyzes labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, such as the number of new jobs created to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.
The number of jobs added to the economy in August was lower by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.
Private Data Indicate Continued Slowdown
Though BLS was set to publish last month’s employment data in early October, it halted its release when the shutdown started. Employment data company ADP indicated recently that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell said recently, a trend he had previously attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.
Price Data Shows Gradual Rise
Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still issued its price statistics for last month that showed that costs are rising, although slowly. Prices rose 3% over the last year, the highest since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
