The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US on five Europeans working on fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
