Approximately fifty vehicles have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the German town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Vehicles, exterior walls and postal boxes were vandalized, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they stated in a official communication.
Officers say they were alerted late on Wednesday evening, when a man observed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been marked with a reddish-hued substance.
The substance had been drawn in the pattern of a swastika, they reported.
Police then discovered multiple other smeared vehicles and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under laws prohibiting the public display of Nazi-era symbols.
Law enforcement report initial examinations show the substance was probably human blood.
"There is still no lead as to its source; authorities are currently not cognizant of any harm in relation with the event," they stated.
Municipal representatives announced they were working "to resolve the incident" and have requested to the community for information.
An important official said the attack rendered him speechless and needed to be resolved rapidly.
"This incident hits the center of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the far-right violent incident half a decade ago," he stated on social media, referring to the murder of nine people by a shooter focusing on residents of migrant background in February 2020.
